1. Dig the hole to the required shape, taking care to make the sides sloping rather than vertical. Make sure the base is as flat as possible so that the liner will have a good fit.
2. Make sure the pond area is free of sharp stones. Place the underlay over the base and sides of the pond (if you do overlap the underlay make sure it is about a 6inch overlap).
3. Now you can install the liner. Place the liner over the pond area, slowly lowering it in (do not forget to leave an overlap around the edge of the pond). When it is in place you can get in the pond (without shoes on) and help mould the liner into place. You will get an idea where creases will be.
4. You can now start to fill the pond with water. As the pond is filling, try to remove as many creases as possible, by pulling into shape. Make sure you fill slowly with water so you have plenty of time to adjust the liner. When you are filling the pond use a water meter so that you know the gallonage of your pond for treatments.
5. Leave the pond overnight to make sure that the liner has fit into place correctly, trim off excess liner that you don't need. You can then hide the liner edge by edging with stones or slabs. Please note:- It is advisable to use a purifier or some dechlorinator liquid when filling the pond up so that it is safe to put fish in the pond.
How to calculate Pond Gallonage
Size in feet x 6.25 = gallonage i.e. length x width x depth x 6.25 = gallonage Example A pond of 20ft x 10ft x 4ft x 6.25 = 5,000 gallons We would always recommend using a water meter and purifier to fill your pond.

How to calculate liner size
By adding twice the maximum pool depth to both length and width. Take care to measure overall pool dimension, at widest point. Plus add 0.6m extra each side for securing liner round the edge.
Example: A pond of 6m x 4m x 2m (length x width x depth) 6m+ 2m + 2m + 0.6m = 10.6m length + (2 x depth) + overlap 4m + 2m + 2m + 0.6m = 8.6m width + (2 x depth) + overlap So you would need a liner 11m x 9m for this size pond (it has to be rounded up to the nearest metre).
