Initial Acclimatisation Try to make the transfer of fish from our enviroment into new conditions as gradual as possible. Float the koi in the bag for half an hour(Do not leave unattended on a hot day,as the level of dissolved oxygen in the water will drop more quickly). Hobbyists wishing to take every precaution against stress to their koi should check for any variation between the pH of the water in he bag & tank, this is more likely after a long journey. This can be adjusted by gradually introducing small amounts of tank water into the bag allowing the fish to adjust for a few minutes each time before release when the pH is identical. On releasing the koi, do not allow any of the transit water into the tank.
Full Acclimatisation This is the biological process by which koi adapt to each new enviroment they live in no matter how temporary. Therefore. we cannot complete this process for any fish no matter how long the quarantine. The journey to their final home & the new enviroment can create stress that may trigger a health problem. The hobbyist, appreciating that stressed fish pose risks. You should quarantie new koi for at least a month, three months being safer. A gradual temperature rise during quarantine is advisable but avoid temperatures over 68F. Quarantine is not foolproof but it minimises the risk of a health problem ultimately spreading to your existing koi. We at Aquarius Koi do advise you to Quarantine fish.
